Suborder: Serpentes
This suborder includes all species of snakes except for blind snakes and thread snakes. All other species of snakes are under Alethinophida. Snakes differ from legless lizards with their lidless eyes and lack of external ear opening. Snakes are ectothermic and carnivorous. They range from small to huge and docile to aggressive. There are currently 15 extant families.
